This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when the narrator is transformed into a wolf. The wolf's tail has been used to copy fifty pages of literature, and the wolf is pretending to be a big wolf. He tells the narrator that he is not an ordinary person, and that he will have to clean up the bathroom in the third floor of the building if he fails the exam. The narrator also tells the story of the flag-raising ceremony, which is a part of the duty week. He asks if anyone knows of a suitable host for the ceremony. The teacher replies that he has no experience in this field, but he is willing to host the ceremony because he is a descendant of the mermen.
