The narrator is surprised to find that the water is clear, and that the trees are bright and sweet. He has lost his sense of taste in the past few years because of his special physique. He wants to ask the landlord to help him grow the tree so that he can eat more of it. The bell rings for class, and the teacher tells him that the dean said that it was free activity. The narrator runs off to find some fruit to eat.
