This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which a group of soldiers, led by the captain of the second squad, is captured by the enemy and taken to the front lines, where they are attacked violently. The captain, however, is able to rescue the soldiers and bring them back to safety. The chapter ends with a soliloquy in which the captain tells the soldiers that he has come to rescue them from the enemy.
