He hears a "piercing humming sound" at certain times of day, but he can't see the sound with his bare eyes because it's completely controlled by the "damn spaceship." He can hear the sound of the ship's engines, and he can even feel something in his own body changing. He's not hungry or thirsty or sleepy, but when he wakes up, he finds himself in the water again. He hates everything about this place, including not being able to save the baby. He also hates himself for not holding the baby tightly. The narrator asks if she's okay, and she says she is. She tells him that they are not starving, and that they still have her to talk to. He tells her that he is happy because they are still alive. He asks her if she thinks she can relax. She says she can, but that she'd rather be sad or desperate than be happy. She asks if he thinks they can do anything. He says they don't even know if they're alive or not.
