About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a time before the novel was written. The narrator tells us that he used to tease his sister about being poor in sports, but that she's been taking care of him since he was a kid. He says that he shouldn't worry about her anymore, because once he's unhappy, she'll get worried. He adds that she loves to take pictures and that she writes down all her feelings when she takes them. He also says that her father gave her a photobook when he died, so she can put all of her pictures in it. She's not very good at cooking, but she loves taking pictures and writing down her feelings. She says that the fall is the time of year when her father's details about them are revealed. He's the one who took the flowers from the forest. He dresses her up and makes her look pretty just to make her feel better. He doesn't bother her too much, though, because he knows that his negative feelings are like ink in a cup. He worries that they'll keep pretending that their feelings are okay and give him a fake smile. He knows that the more they do that, the more he'll feel guilty and he won't want them to help him.
