In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named Anne. Anne is a young man who has just returned from the Crusades. He tells the audience that he is a member of the Brotherhood of Assassins and that he has come to help the people of France. He asks the audience if they would like to help him in any way, and they all agree that they would. He also tells them that his father once tried to marry him off to one of his sons, but that he did not want to do so. He then tells the crowd that he will offer their blood as a sacrifice to seal them away once more, and that they should not let the evil spirits escape. He adds that he hears a noise from the house on the hill, and he wonders if there is a ball in the distance. He says that he does not know what is going on, but he does know that they are using the dead to collect sacrifices. He wants to go back to help them, but his father tells him to stop the ritual with the four of them. He does not want them to kill him, he says, because he is busy with his own business. But Anne says that they still need to perform the ritual, because the man will not hesitate to kill them
