In this chapter, we learn about the cooking competition that is going on at the school. It's called the "Madeleines Competition," and it's being held in honor of the school's president, who can't participate in the competition because he's in charge of the entire school. We learn that each of the students will make their own "madeleines," which represent the school, and they'll be judged on how well they've cooked them. The president is not allowed to vote, so each student will have to make his or her own madeleine, which will be judged by a panel of judges. The judges include the author of the book, who is judging the competition, and the owner of the diner, who will be judging the diner's madeleines.
