About This Chapter
A month ago, six female bones were dug up from the Lin women, but no one has been able to identify them. One of the bones was found to have black cat hairs on it. Since then, every night, black cats have attacked the village, scratching the people. The officials compare the pictures of the dead women and conclude that the girl is one of them. They arrested the two managers of the jade mine and will be tried the next morning. The steward of the mine explains that the jade was cultivated with blood of the girl, and that he hopes that the court will handle the matter impartially. He asks the coroner to examine the bones of the six women. The coroner looks at the pelvis, which narrows from the top to the bottom and is shaped like a funnel. The front bones are shaped like the front of a man, and the back of a woman. He then asks the steward to look at the other five bones, which are all shaped like funnel. He wonders if the girl's blood has been used to nourish the jade.
