This chapter opens with a soliloquy by the Governess of the General Prison. The Governess tells the story of how she and her family were caught spying on the family of the Prince of the Ming family. She tells the Prince that her family is innocent, and that she is trying to protect the family from being persecuted. She also tells the prince that she has found the regent of the prison to be a loyal friend of hers. The prince is impressed by her kindness, and asks her why she is treating him so well
