In this short scene, we are introduced to Mr. Ming and his son, Mr. Xing, who have just arrived in Shanghai. The two men have just returned from a meeting with Samchi, a doctor from the East China town of Shunyi, who has come to claim Ming's father as his own. Ming has promised to pay Samchi back tenfold if he agrees to treat his father well. He tells his son that he has decided to intervene in the dispute between Shunyi and his father's union in order to find a solution to the problem
