In this chapter, we learn that the Governess has decided to visit her father in law. The Governess tells her father that she wants to get to know him better. She wants to be able to convince him that she is his daughter and that no one else can take her from him. She also wants to know how old he is and how much money he has. He seems to have an impression of him. He tells her that he has a steady job as a cook and that his family is very different from hers. He says that he was worried that she would slip away from him, but she assures him that her family is the only thing that matters in life. She tells him that he should not forget her when he reaches the top of the social ladder.
