In this chapter, we learn that the girls have been hard at work, studying, and hunting. They haven't been able to find the lock, so they're going to knock on the door to see if they can find it. They find it, but it's locked, so the girl doesn't know who it is. She's so excited that she runs off to get the lock back. The girl tells us that the girl in the lock is her mother's aunt, who used to have a child with the girl's father, but unfortunately, the child died of an illness. This is the last straw, says the girl, because her ex-husband isn't dead yet. She tells the girls that they've spent all their money on this lock, and that they should be spending it on themselves now. They're still young, she says, and they'll be fashion lovers until they die. She asks the girl to hold the baby while she grows up, and the girl says she'll hold it for a while, and then she and the baby will come and stay with her at her house. She says that she hopes the girl will grow up to be a woman someday, because she's going to have to go to the hospital soon, and she wants to be able to see a doctor, too. She wants to take the lock as a present for the girl and baby, but the girl thinks that's just a superstition, and says she won't believe it.
