It's nine in the morning, and the Governess is hungry and thirsty. She asks her driver to take her and her friend to a nearby inn, where they can have a bite to eat before going back to school the next day. The Governess tells the driver that she's tired and wants to sleep, but the driver won't take her to the inn because it's too far away from the school. She tells him that she wants to stay in a hotel for the night, and he agrees. He tells her that the hotel is famous for its romantic atmosphere, and that there are many famous actors who have come to stay there. He says that he's heard that many films have been made in the hotel, but he doesn't know what to make of it. He's not sure if the Ghost in the Hotel is a real person, or if it is just a character from one of his favorite novels. The Ghost is a character in one of the novels he reads, and so he thinks that it must be the same person as the one he saw in the novel. He asks the driver if he can take him back to the hotel. The driver agrees, and they go back to their room.
