About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Hayao's father is dead, and that his body is now in the hands of his son-in-law, the shinki . Hayao tells his mother that he is on his way back to the village, but first he wants to see his father. He asks her to take him to see the "shinki" , and she agrees to do so. He tells her that he has lost all of his other names, but that he still has the "mizuchi" symbol, which means he is still Mizuchi. He says that he knows how he died, but he doesn't know how to break him, because he is a "special father" . He also says that his father turned into an "ayakashi" just because he made the "poorest goddess" pay him a visit. He wonders why Hayao asked them to find the box, and he says that it looks like Hayao recorded the message before he left for the village. He then asks for the "filing cabi net," which is a document that contains information about the afterlife. He wants to know where the "cabi net" is, so he asks for it, and Hayao says that they have known Hayao for a long time. They have known each other for the past few days, he says, and they have seen each other a number of times. He adds that he was thinking about a strange pair he met the other the other day, who tried to sell him out of his money, but Hayao will always be there. The snake is not moving, so they check out the box. It means "pristine spirit," which means that the "sunset spirit" is the purest form of the human spirit. It is rare for the spirit to fade into nothing after meeting its maker. The reason Hayao thought that he would meet his maker was that he had come before, but the master did not know their past. The shinki is scared of the possibility that they might find reminders of their past
