About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator tells us about a young man who works as a prostitute in a brothel. He's about nineteen years old and has a "temper" . The narrator says that this young man has killed a client recently, and that the victim's family wants to keep the whole thing a secret from the public. He says that if the public knew about the killing, it would ruin the young man's reputation, so they're going to sell the body as soon as it's gone. This is "sickening" to the narrator, who says that he already knows that Paul has nothing after he fought with his younger brother over his inheritance. He wants to know how much money Paul has, and how much he's been spending on the body of his dead brother. He tells the narrator that the first time he saw him, he gave up everything he had to save him. He asks why he was so careless with his life, and he says that all he feels is regret. He also says that the minute he wakes up, he feels like he'll regret everything. He knows that if he cuts the body, it will ruin the picture, but he doesn't want to cut the body because it'll make him look like a dead man.
