About This Chapter
In this chapter, we are told that the family is not prepared for the harsh winter that has just arrived. James is very sick, and Janet tries to comfort him. She tells him that if he sleeps with his windows open, he will catch a cold and stay by his side all night. She also tells him to rub his forehead with a spoonful of Janet's "specialty syrup" to help him get better. When he asks why she doesn't stroke his forehead more often, she replies that he must be a "bad kid" . Janet tells her to hug him "10 times" , and he says that this is the tenth time he's been touched by her. He says that it feels like he is "someone precious" for her, and that she's not at all "filthy." He tells her that he wants to become Henry's son, and she groans that she didn't realize there was a window behind their wardrobe.
