About This Chapter
In this chapter, James explains that he is leaving the island because he does not want to be associated with the people who live there. He says that Henry gave him money because he gave money to anyone, and that he doesnt know what else to give to others. He compares Henry's gift to a birthday present from him, a gold statue of a phinx. James says that he will not return to the island forever. He asks if he can be taken to the dock, but he is told that it will take at least six hours. He then asks if there will be any boats to carry him off the island the next day. Cuthbert has purchased every boat in the island, and he has released all the sharks in the ocean. James protests that he has never seen a shark, but cuthbert assures him that there are. James then moans that he was not given enough time to explain himself.
