About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he wants to be happy. He's just won a medal in an intramural track meet and wants to try out for the Olympic Games. He asks if Henry wants to shake his hand. The narrator is nervous, but he's also excited to shake Henry's hand for the first time since he was a kid. Henry tells him not to worry, though, because he knows what's going to happen. A few days later, Henry notices that the shoes on James's feet are missing. He tells the narrator that he'll buy him a new pair, but the narrator doesn't buy it. He hates the shoes, he says, because they're the only thing he wants when he leaves the house. Henry says that he needs more farm workers, so he hires some.
