About This Chapter
The next morning, Henry asks James to help him plant turnips. He's been trying to do it by himself, but the results are always disastrous. Now that he's done with the planting, he wants to plant them together. He wants to make sure that they'll be able to see the turnip flowers, which is why they haven't yet been able to pick them. James says he'll make a wish first, and then they can plant the seeds. Henry tells James that he used to be locked up in a room above his bed when he was a kid. He used to sit in the window and watch the turnip plants grow in the garden. When he was free, he wanted to sit outside and watch them grow. Now, when he gets to be old enough to go outside, he wishes that he could sit in that same room and watch his favorite vegetable plants grow. This is the birthday cake that Henry always makes for James.
