About This Chapter
Mr. James is 23 years old, unmarried, and not yet married. He is looking for a farmworker to help him on his farm. He says he is too old to adopt a child of that age, but he is willing to take the boy back to his orphanage. He tells Mr. Cuthbert that it is his first time on the road, and he hopes that the boy will not be crying. He asks if he can call him by his first name, but Mr. Cutshbert says that he does not want to be called by his last name. When he first met him at the train station, he told him that it was his "first time outside of orphanage" and that he looked "quite the same" as the other children in the orphanage. The boy says that his "cursed ginger hair" has made him look "unattractive" to other men and women who are looking for children to adopt. He adds that he would like to stay and work on the farm with the boy.
