About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that Cai-Ling is a "little twisted" kid who doesn't really have a lot of friends. He's just "a little twisted" because he's such a good student. He asks the narrator to talk to his classmates and try to help him make friends. The narrator says that he'd like to help, but he can't, because he has a secret: he wants to be the best piano player in the world. He says he'll hide the fact that he loves playing the piano for Cai-Liang. He tells the narrator that they're going to meet later that night. The piano player says that his friend's best friend was too aggressive when he said he didn't recognize the boy. This is not a good sign, says the piano player, because it means that the boy has known about him since high school. The boy must have known him since then, because his friend must have seen a mark on the boy's neck when he saw the mark. So the boy must've known about the piano since he was in high school, and he must have wanted to know who the boy was. He must have thought that he wasn't good enough to be a piano player for the boy, because the boy isn't as good as he thinks he is. He hopes that one day, the boy will see the truth.
