About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a conversation between the "little cultivator" and the "fried rice" . The little cultivator is confused by the expression "love" that the little cultivator has just given him. He is also disappointed that he has not yet found someone he loves. He asks the little master why he did not spend time with the woman before making his decision. The master explains that the contract between the two of them is a mutual benefit, and both parties work for the common good. Before humans and spirits learn to live together, they must learn to be kind to one another. They must remember not to be too sincere with one another, the master explains. This distinction, he says, does not make sense for coexistence because it may affect the way humans behave towards humans. He adds that they have agreed not to tell the cultivators about the contract, but that if the situation is such that it is impossible for the two to be together, then the two will not be together for long. He then mentions that the fox spirit that made a contract at the competition was able to gather spiritual energy from his contractor. He says that he is envious of this fox spirit because he is able to do this himself. He also mentions that he must apologize to the contract spirit in person. He wants to see him again.
