About This Chapter
The prince asks the commander of the army if he can read a military log. The commander says he can't, since he's so low on food. The prince says he has made a deal with the commander: he'll take grain from his own soldiers and feed the captives. If the commander keeps pushing him, the prince says, he will throw the grain to the dogs. The general says, "As a stray dog, you should be leashed, and kneel at my feet . . you should hold me in the palm of my hands, if my death will save them . then, just kill me." The prince tells the commander not to touch him, and says he will be his slave.
