About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a time when a family lived in the same house. The narrator tells us that the family had a "dirty little secret" , and that the secret was that the man had "no tights high brow" . We learn that this man was disliked by his family because he was a self-taught artist who drew dirty manga. We also learn that the narrator's father had read some of the books in the house, but he had never liked the artist. The family had to hide the fact that they disliked the artist because they thought that the artist's sense of self was too high-brow. This made the artist think of himself as self-centered and self-important, which made him feel like he was not good enough to be a good artist.
