The chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her Governess's daughter. The Governess asks her daughter-in-law why she told her to date three different men at once. She tells her daughter that it was a long story, and that she should ditch one of the men without delay. She also tells her that her daughter's mother blamed her for giving birth to a girl, and she begs her daughter not to force her hand. She says that she has no control over her daughter and that work has gotten the better of her while she has been holding back on house chores. She adds that she was afraid to tell anyone her name because she had a fear of becoming "a laughing stock" . She then tells him that she is inviting him to her house because she wants to save money, and because she is the only girl in the class who also likes spicy hot pot. When she asks him why he is inviting her, he replies that he is only inviting her because she has invited him because he also likes hot pot, and he is also the only one who likes to go to the loo with her without her.
