The chapter opens with a conversation between Martin and Lu huan. Lu tells Martin that he is happy with his marriage and that he hopes he will move to Shanghai to live with his family. Martin tells Lu that he has to confirm two important things: first, that his father and Martin's father were divorced, and second, that Lu's baby is two months old. Lu says that they can talk about the baby later, but that he must return to the United Kingdom to attend a selection meeting for a new position in China. Martin says that he will sleep well after the meeting, and then goes to bed. He wakes up to find that his parents have invited him to an exhibition of private paintings in their home. The exhibition is being held in a more casual atmosphere than the one they had planned for the meeting with Martin. Lu shows Martin around his new home, which is very large. He tells him that his fiancee, xixi, is wealthy, and that she chose him because he was a good match for her.
