In this short scene, we are introduced to the young lovers, Zhengzhou and Zhangyu, who have just returned from Shanghai. We learn that Zhengzhou's father is on his way to the market place to buy some household goods, and that his mother is also on her way there to pick up some things. The young lovers are overjoyed to see each other, and Zhengzhou declares that it is a great honor for him to be able to show his love for his new girlfriend. He also reveals that he has heard rumors that Zhao has dumped his first love, a beautiful, high-born woman, for a girl of lower birth. Zhengzhou is delighted to see his old friend, and he gives him the graduation gift he made for her when she was about to graduate from college. He is glad that his parents did not try to embarrass him in front of them, as he used to think that he would never have feelings for Zhao again.
