About This Chapter
"The devil and the summer festival" is the title of the first chapter of Shmoop's "The Devil and the Summer Festival" , which is set in a summer festival in Harumi, a small town in northeastern Japan. The protagonist and his friend, 17yo, are going to a shooting gallery to win a prize at the festival, but they are interrupted by a banner announcing that the prize winner is a young man named Hiroyuki, who has been shooting with his father's friend. Hiroyuki is teaching Hiroyuki how to keep his focus on the target until he finishes the shot, and the protagonist is impressed by the young man's skill. The two of them decide to go to the festival together, and Hiroyuki tells the protagonist that he has been doing well lately, and that he will go out with him until he "learns to obey me" . When Hiroyuki asks him if he wants the prize, Hiroyuki says that he does, but that if he does not want it, he will toss it to him for his own good. He tells Hiroyuki that if his bad luck spreads to him, then he should stick close to him and not let it get in the way of his enjoyment of the festival. He also tells him that his father gave him extra money to try different flavors of fish at his dad's stall, and he is dying to try them all. He asks if it is just him, or is it Hiroyuki's father, who gave him the extra money. He says that it is strange to see Hiroyuki in a traditional yukata, a Japanese costume, when Hiroyuki cannot handle the horror of it. He wants to go with him, and they decide that they will go together.
