About This Chapter
In this short scene, the young narrator tries to avoid the attentions of the white prince, who has been flirting with a girl named Shuchikawa. He tries to convince himself that the prince is just trying to flirt with her, but she is adamant that she is not going out with him. She tells him that she does not want to see him and that she has a job waiting for her. The young narrator tells her that he is glad for the rainy day and wonders why the prince would choose to pick her over another girl. She then tells him about how she has been on a diet and is worried that she will not be able to go out with the prince because she has never had a boyfriend before. She asks him if he knows what a normal date is, and he says that he does not. He then asks her if she is worried about the prince's appearance, and she replies that he looked "dash ing" when he saw her. She says that if she were thirty years younger, she would have avoided him.
