The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, where Jane is in high school and has just started to develop a new image for herself. She has a crush on the white prince, but she doesn't know where to find him, so she decides to go on a summer vacation with him and his friend, the black prince. The two of them go to the train station to meet up with their friends, who are also on their way to the prince's summer home. When they arrive at the station, they are greeted by the "harumigahara wheel" , which is a giant carriage, and they are shown to their rooms. The wheel is so large that it is difficult for them to move, so they are forced to stay in the carriage with the prince, who kisses them on the cheek. As they wait for their rooms to be opened, the wheel tells them that he is a "caretaker" for the estate, and that he would like to show them to the rooms before they settle in. He asks them to wait for him, and when they do, he tells them to pounce on him for help.
