The Archbishop of Essendean explains that the attack on the soldiers was an act of God. He says that the light from the cannons can only pierce two or three people at a time. He tells the Archbishop that he will have to flee behind the soldiers. The Archbishop says that he has no choice but to do so. The King of Falmuth asks the Archbishop if he is telling the truth, and the Archbishop replies that he is the arch-bishop of the Western holy church. He explains that he brought his army to fight the Bastard because he wanted to protect himself. The Bastard's people declared war on him un provoked, but the Archbishop says they were only trying to learn if he was worthy of friendship
