The Governess tells the merchant that she doesn't want him to know who she is. She's not going to let him know that she's pregnant. The merchant, however, knows that the Governess is pregnant. He gives her a bottle of his healing salve. The girl asks who the man is, and the man says that he's the merchant in question. He says that the potion is proof that he was born in the city of blumund, and that the merchant would never die in such a situation. The man is shocked that the girl knows who he is. He tells her that the entire purpose of transposing himself into an adult was to hide his identity. He's shocked that she even knew who he was. He hopes that they can remain on friendly terms. He asks the man on guard duty if he has a moment of his time, and he says that it's time for him to leave the man alone. The guard, he says, just gave him a bribe. This is one of two big merchants in blumond, and this man is the second biggest merchant. The guy on guard says that his hired man will not say any of the things that he couldn't say. The hired man says he'll call on the man again. He thinks the man looks like an honest businessman.
