In this short scene, we are introduced to a young woman who has just graduated from high school. She is now a student at a boarding school in New York City. We are told that she is the daughter of a well-to-do New York family and that her father works as a teacher in a school in Queens, New York. The young woman is very shy and does not speak much English, but she is a good student and has a good understanding of the school's rules and regulations. She tells us that she does not want to go to class with the other students because it would be too much work and she would not be able to provide for her family. The teacher, however, has agreed to give her extra lessons in order to help her prepare for her exams in a month's time.
