At the end of the first chapter, the narrator laments that it is too late to get married, since he is only interested in being loved by someone else. He then goes on to say that he wants to be a good cook, but that he does not want to become famous just because he is a cook. He wants to convey his feelings through his food, and he feels that his food conveys his feelings. The narrator then decides to make a short film about a docu-matrician.
