The chapter opens with the narrator lamenting that it is too late for her to fall in love with Hiroyuki. She feels that she has no desire to fight against "the rising greed" of the man she loves. She wants him so that she can "grip" her "animalistic side" of him, and she feels she finally knows why she is a woman. The narrator goes on to say that he feels like he finally knows the reason why he is a man a month later when he attends an international cuisine contest. He is invited to the wedding of Hiroyuki and Mihara, and he is delighted to be invited. He tells the narrator that he has come to congratulate them on their upcoming marriage and to invite him to the reception when they get married
