The chapter opens with a flashback to the first time the demon ate the food given to him by Madame de Pomfret. The flashback shows that the demon was hungry because he lacked the power to control the other humans. The narrator tells us that the first thing the demon did was eat the food. He was surprised because he was lacking in control. He says that he is glad he met Madame, because she is the only person who has been with him during his time in captivity. He tells her that after meeting her, he is happy that it is a good thing he is alive. He also tells her not to lower her guard and not to suppress the demon. The demon is the one who sealed off 200 years ago and he will not be killed by her. He wants to kill all the remaining humans. He asks her if she wishes to live or not. She says she does not wish to live. He promises to eat her, but he says that even though he promised, he couldnt keep his promise. He then asks if he is sure that the other members of the party went this way. He wonders if they set up a barrier to keep people away from them. He realizes that they had no idea about demons. After eating all the food, the demon is smiling with satisfaction
