This chapter opens with a conversation between a group of senior scholars and gongsun, the elder of the school. He tells the scholars that he left a slip of jade for them to take with them as a token of his friendship with lin feng. He says that lin is a friend of his, and that he hopes the scholars will enroll him in their school so that he may practice at the school of mount lao. This is the voice of the elder, and it seems that he was the one who worried about lin's innocence. The elder says that he will give the slip back to lin, but that there is something "weird" about the boy, and he will not believe anyone without proof. He then tells the other scholars to take lin and the elder to a place where they can rest. Worried about the future of the righteous path, lin asks the elder if he meant to target him, but the elder replies that he did not mean to do so. He explains that he took the matter too seriously, and apologizes for what happened. He asks lin why he seems dissatisfied with him, and lin says that it is because of the girl Zhao Yunshan. Unsure as to who Zhao is, and confused as to why lin does not like Zhao, yunzhongque explains that Zhao was invited to serve as an advisor to the day-long dynasty, and since then, he has never enrolled anyone who is the daughter of the current emperor.
