This chapter begins with a description of martial arts, which are divided into body refining , bone refining, and marrow refining. Body refining is to strengthen body and tap into potential; bone refining is for the growth and development of bones and connective tissue around them. It is the threshold for a captain; marrow refining means for the absorption of spiritual qi between heaven and earth; and becoming a centurion . The drillmaster explains that he is a bone refining master and that he and shaoyu are best friends. The next day, the two men go out to fetch water and cut firewood. They play a game of who can chop wood faster, and the drillmaster wins. The two men discuss their dreams, and Shaoyu dreams of being a powerful man who will slay demons and devil spirits. He wants to lead a "quiet life" as "an ordinary person"
