This chapter opens with a discussion of the "rule" of design: "following the rule" or "having a better design" . This is the first time the audience is introduced to the concept of "designing" , and we learn that designing takes a great deal of time, effort, and sacrifice. The narrator tells us that he's the one who decides what the rules are, and that he makes the rules, not the other way around. He says that the only way to make a good design is to follow the rules or to have a better one. He tells us how Caius Ming-liang's new design is a better version of his old one, and he says that he used to be a bad influence on Caius, but now that he
