About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the girl from the beginning of the story, who we call "Takochan," is a "quarter non-Japanese" and that her uncle, who is rich, sent her a blanket so she wouldn't have to wear it during the fight. Takochan tells us that she's the "greatest weapon" for her health: "On that front -- my health -- nobody beats me" . She tells us how her uncle picked her up when she was in grade school and that she vowed to make him the best player in the world. Before long, she joined a school in California with a strong volleyball team. Her uncle was happy to see her win games, but when she lost, he was angry all day. Tetachan says that one time he saw a girl from Japan stand out among the crowd during a game of volleyball. The girl's name was "Mari oishi" and she seemed like a "Japanese girl" , except that she was also a "Volleyball girl" and everyone around her seemed to like her, too. She was a great player, but her uncle would never let her play because she was too young and he would be angry if she lost. Tatachan says she has a little sister named "Makako," and that if she loses, her uncle will "abandon" her. He tells her that if he loses, he'll move in with the other kids in the school so they can all play together. She says that when she heard about this, she wanted to return to Japan and play with her sister. She gave her sister the notebook she had written about volley ball, and she says that she still dreams of going back to her homeland and playing with her.
