About This Chapter
It's time for the final chapter of the novel. The narrator explains that he finally has a "virtue" that can "change history" and "evolve humans" to be "more perfect" . He wants to know why all the people in his laboratory are dead, and why he can still complete his research in his home laboratory. He's also worried that he's been tricked by his father, who has been lying to him all along. He tells his father that his wife is just a "small individual" and that his research can change history just as much as his wife can. He also tells his dad that even if he were to go overboard, he wouldn't kill him, because he'd be different from his father in one important way: he'll never betray his father. He hears his father wailing behind him in the laboratory and realizes that the fire has gone out and that the man has disappeared. He realizes that there's only one person in the entire world who can never betray him, and that's the man who truly loves him.
