The chapter opens with a description of the characters introduced in the previous chapter. The narrator introduces us to the two childhood friends of yamada, akama and seno. Akama is "charmless and an airhead" . . She is also "modest and slow" on the uptake of love. She admires sena, whom she considers a "kind and perfect guy" , and she admires toda, whom he considers an "idiot but loyal friend." . They meet in high school, and they are often together, but they never notice each other's true feelings for each other. Toda is an idiot, but loyal to her friends, and akama is his childhood friend. She and toda often drop by their classes, but the two of them are "soringtime" by the "wiridava" to wrap up the school year. They decide to go on dates over the summer break, and yamada asks to be taken to the "summer festival" with her. She wants to go with "a cutie," but she doesn't want to go just with her two friends. She tells toda that she likes him, and that she wants to attend the festival with him.
