This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter. In this flashback, we are introduced to a number of characters, including the Duke, his wife, and their son. The Duke and his wife are in the middle of a battle, and the Duke is wounded. He is bleeding profusely, and his son, the Duke's son, is also wounded, but he is able to escape the battle alive.
