In this short scene, we learn that the Duke's eldest son, the Duke Senior, is in the middle of a heated argument with a student at the university. The student, who is a member of the royal family, is trying to get the Duke to cancel his marriage with the student's mother. The Duke, however, refuses to listen to his mother's advice. He tells the student that the university's teachings are better than those offered by the royal residence at Pingnan Palace.
