The chapter opens with a flashback to the scene in which the Governess is trying to enter the house of the Lord of the North. The Governess tries to get the Lord to open the door to her, but the Lord refuses to let her in. She is afraid that the Lord will find out that she has been hiding out with the North's commander, and he will suspect her of being a spy for the Lord.
