The scene opens with a soliloquy by Caius Mingus, in which he laments the fact that his son has not yet met his father and that he has never known his mother. He asks his son to call him "Yu" from now on. He then gives him a letter to write to the emperor to request that Caius be made the most honorable noble. The letter is addressed to the Emperor, requesting that he make Caius "the most honorable nobility" . Caius then gives the letter to his wife, who asks him what the title is.
