The narrator tells us that he's going to go trick-or-treating with his friends. He's not sure what to do, but he knows that the attendants will give him a piece of his soul to wrap in a candy wrapper. The attendants will help him unwrap the candy and stuff it into his mouth. The narrator says that the mockingbird who gets the most presents will get to dine with the lord jiu-tao. The mockingbird that receives the most gifts will get the chance to kiss the lord. This is a weird prize, but the narrator is psyched. He wants to be the first person to get a kiss. He can't stay in the rose court because the girls are so scary. He decides to become a "living dead" so that he can stay. He doesn't know how to get there yet, but it's the only way he'll stay.
