About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of demi-humans, or human beings who are unable to live a normal life because of their genetic makeup. In other words, they're like vampires, but without the blood and the guts. The narrator explains that humans have become so popular in the West that they've created a whole new class of people who are "delightful" or "human" in their own right. He's a biology teacher at a school called Shimbashisaki High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. He tells us that he's been teaching for four years and that he wants to do research on demi humans. He wants to know how they live, what they think, and how they feel, but he can't figure out how to do it. So he goes to the faculty room and introduces himself as "sakie sato" . He says he'll be starting his research in the fall, and he looks forward to working with the other students. He asks if there's someone in his class who looks like a vampire, and the teacher says there isn't. The teacher says he hasn't seen her face in a long time, so he took her to the "i vampire" to see if it was safe to touch her. He also says that another student collapsed from class the other day, and they had to stomp her down to get her to a nurse's station. The other student is a "dullahan girl" , and she's got a cold. So the teacher asks if the girl is a vampire. She says she is, and then he asks if it's safe for her to touch the vampire. He doesn't know what to make of it, but the teacher tells him to stomp the girl down, and that's when he realizes that there are so many vampires in the school. He wonders if he should be happy
