The narrator laments the fact that he cannot go outside to play with his friends because of the noise of the neighbors' voices. He tries to convince himself that the neighbors can hear him, but they can't. He tells himself that he is lucky that he has a Zashiki Warashi, or "supernatural" spirit, who can bring him "happiness" . He wonders if he should find a way to make his friends happy. He suggests that they move to a different house, where he can find an adult who can support him. The narrator asks his friend, gab, about his third-period education at Musashino University, and he tells him that it is easier to invite him out if he is clear about when he is not allowed to come. He also mentions that the place is very clean when he came by a few years ago. He asks if he can buy an eco-friendly bag, and the narrator replies that he will buy some cake for zashiko to celebrate
