This is a locked chapterChapter 23: When Demis Don't Interview
About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator wondering if the rainy season is here for real. He tells us that he doesn't hear anything in the library, and that his friend, machi, is asleep. The narrator says that machi has permission from her parents to carry her head on her chest while she's sleeping, but that they've weighed the risks and decided that it's best for her to carry it on her shoulders. He says that he asked machi about it once, but she didn't tell him about it. He remembers something from his own childhood, when he used to walk around with his head on his chest, and he says that walking looks easy, but walking is very complicated if you've got your head on your chest. He wonders if machi is asleep, and wonders if someone thought he was asleep. He asks his dad if he asked her to tell him, and his dad says that hikari did have a "weird smirk" on her face after she left, which the narrator thinks is a prank. He thinks that his parents have been kind to him, too, and asks if he can leave a note for machi. He leaves a note in the hallway, and when he gets home, he realizes that he left his backpack in the room where machi was sleeping. He's glad that he did, because he's going to have to write a lot for her.
